The paintings in Catalogue 1 are works with gold leaf and natural mineral pigments. These pigments are hand ground from rocks and crystals. This includes lapis lazuli and azurite (blue pigments), malachite (green) and cinnabar (red). These pigments were common during the Renaissance. During the19th century the developing chemical industry started to produce synthetic pigments and oil paint in tubes. Chroma-Scapes
Chroma-Scapes (2024)
These works perform as a conceptual transfiguration of a landscape into a chromatic composition based upon the pigment particle size of the prepared rocks and crystals. The layers of colour of the natural mineral pigments create a chromatic depth to unify the compositional elements which perform like a landscape memory, or dream. Pure gold leaf and white gold as final layers, or under-layers for other colours are integral in creating a luminous chromatic experience.
